The Tigers learned much from their first loss!

Yes, we did lose our first game with the highly ranked young team we have.  We lost to Kansas, a mature team that taught us much by patiently waiting to shoot by continously passing the ball until the play develops.  We further learned that when the team's cohesion exists, confidence builds that always allows shooting percentages to increase.

As much as I like our coach and all the staff Pastner assembled, I truly believe they learned much from Kansas' coaching style.  Not only was their team mature, but the coaching was as well.  Their team just looked ready to play, while we looked frazzled and undisciplined.

We have so many new freshmen who are young and new at the collegiate level.  I belive we will get better and better.  We have a team full of guys that were not custom to losing very often when they were back in High School.  Many of our guys came to us highly ranked as 4 and 5 star recruits, and have raw talent that only needs experience and developing.

Although we are young, coaches as well as players, you gotta like our team!  As humbling as the defeat was for some of these allstars of ours, it offers our team a chance to take two steps back, and three forward.  It may very well be the catalyst to move this team to the next level.  Now they are ready to learn!  Go Tigers!!!!

Interesting Quotes after Tiger's first defeat after losing to # 4 Kansas

The Memphis Tigers, now 7-1, ranked No. 13 in the Associated Press poll and No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll going into the game, were soundly defeated by the #4 Kansas Jayhawks.  I found some interesting quotes from some of the Tiger players after theoir defeat.

Spoon:  "I guarantee from here on out, there won't be a harder player in NCAA basketball than me."

Black on Spoon's comment:  "I get the reaction that his intentions are good, " freshman forward Tarik Black said. "But like Will (Coleman) said, talk is cheap.  I'm not downing my teammate.  I'm pretty sure he is gonna work hard.  Honestly, id he works hard, everybody else has to match his entinsity, and that will make us a much better team.

"I'm actually hoping that (Witherspoon) takes up on that and really does go out and start working on his game and jsut becomes a better leader.  Because in the end, if he starts working harder, Will will start working harder.  Idf Will starts working harder, I'll start working harder.  It's jsut a chain reaction.  It has to start with somebody; why not him?"

Will Coleman:  "Everybody wants to get paid.  Everybody wants to get drafted.  I mean, I've talked (to teammates), but a person can only talk so much.  You know, I don't wanna hit anybody or anything crazy like that, but everybody just needs to buy in; that's all we need.  Because, I feel like if they do, if we all come together and just listen to the man in charge, we will be fine."

Big man Garcia leaving the Tigers & Wesley Witherspoon injured!

With the Tiger's #1 player, Wesley Witherspoon's recent knee surgery and 6"11"Angel Garcia decding to leave the Tigers at the end of this semester to go play professional basketball overseas, Coach Pastner definitely made the right move to officially enact the redshirted 6'8" tall freshman Hippolyte Tsafack.

According to Coach Pastner, Hipp, as the team calls him, is excited about the opportunity. "When we made the decision to redshirt Hipp, it was mainly because of a numbers game and not finding enough minutes for him. At that time, I didn't want him to waste a year with very limited playing time. However, as in most seasons with many teams, plans change, and that's what happened with us," said Coach Pastner.

"Hipp, a native of Yaounde, Cameroon, played eight minutes and had three points and two rebounds.  has continued to work hard in practice, and before home games, he's usually the first one on the court at the arena working on his game. It may take him a couple of games to get back in the flow of things, but we're looking for him to give us some help on the frontline," added Pastner.

Tsafack came off the bench, played 11 minutes, and scored two points and acquired five rebounds against the Lemoyne Owens Magicians in the first exhibition game of the year.  In the second exhibition game against Christian Brothers, he played eight minutes, and had three points and two rebounds.  Hpp should be a nice replacement for Angel Garcia once he matures and develops with a little experience behind his belt.

Memphis vs Kansas 12-7-10 Game Recap

#4 Kansas was favored to defeat the #14 Memphis Tigers by 11 points, and won by 13, 81 to 68.  We cannot win games getting outrebounded 44 to 33 against a team like Kansas. Angel Garcia at 6'11 got 1 rebound; Spoon got 2 rebounds, DJ Stepehens got 0, Will Coleman got 3, & Tarik Black got 4 rebounds. We have to get more production out of our big men, both defensively & offensively in order to win the big games.

Kansas is a team to study and learn from. They got 19 assists to our 10, and they are a walking definition of a team. They beat the pants off us in the paint, both offensively and defensively. They shot much better than us with 57% vs our dismal 37%, and they produced an astounding 55% from the 3 pt line vs our 32%.

I will say that I liked our hustle. Our foul shooting was much better than theirs at 73% vs Kansas' 58%. However, as much as I love JJ, he simply failed to lead last night for some reason, having 4 TO's and only 1 point. We seemed rattled quite often and off our game, while Kansas seemed poised and confident, which always seems to produce great field goal percentages.

Although a bit late, Will Barton stepped up to lead our team in rebounds with 7 rebounds!!!!! Well done Will; not bad for a guard! Will Barton also lead our team with 16 points! All in all, I am excited about the learning experience and the youthful talent we have. We will only get better, and should get through much of this by March, but we have lots of work to do. Go Tigers!!!!!
